A Huntington resident who died from injuries suffered in a crash early Sunday at a Greenlawn intersection was an off-duty NYPD officer, according to the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York.
Michael Izzo, 42, was critically injured about 3:19 a.m. on Sunday when the 2009 Honda CRV he was driving east on Little Plains Road collided with a 2022 Toyota Tundra heading north on Broadway Avenue, the Suffolk police department said in a news release.
Izzo was transported in critical condition to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, according to the release. The Suffolk police announced Izzo's death Wednesday.
He was a member of the NYPD and off-duty at the time of the crash, according to John Nuthall, the communications director for the PBA.
Izzo's colleagues at the 111th Precinct, which covers northeastern areas of Queens, organized an online fundraiser to support his family, Nuthall said. The fundraiser's organizers said Izzo died Tuesday and described him as a "devoted" officer and a member of the precinct's Quality of Life Team.
"Michael proudly joined the NYPD in December 2021 and quickly became known as a dedicated officer who cared deeply about his community and the work he did," the organizers said. "His loss is deeply felt by his fellow officers, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him."
The driver of the Toyota pickup truck was not injured, Suffolk police said. The department impounded the two vehicles for safety checks.
Detectives ask anyone with information regarding the fatal crash to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6553.
