State Attorney General Letitia James has opened an investigation into the death of a Hampton Bays woman who was struck earlier this year by the vehicle of an off-duty Quogue Village police officer.

The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation said Thursday that it will look into the Jan. 8 death of Margaret Lucey, 89.

Lucey was crossing Ponquogue Avenue westbound in Hampton Bays shortly before 11 a.m. when she was struck by Quogue police officer Jon Stanton’s personal vehicle, which was making a left turn from Good Ground Road, authorities said.

Stanton remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigation, Southampton Town police said in a news release at the time. No criminality was suspected, the release said.

Lucey was taken by Hampton Bays Volunteer Ambulance to Southampton Hospital where she died from her injuries, Southampton Town police said.

The news release identified Stanton but did not mention his job on the Quogue police force.

Quogue Village police did not immediately respond Thursday evening to requests for comments on the investigation.

Records show Stanton was hired by the department in February 2022.

Under a 2021 state law, the Office of Special Investigation handles cases of deaths involving on- and off-duty police, peace officers and correction officers. The office investigates the cause and can present evidence of any crime to a grand jury, which can hand down indictments. The office said it investigates more than 200 cases a year.
