One person was killed and another seriously injured after they were struck by cars in separate incidents in Suffolk County on Wednesday, police said.

Around 10:30 p.m., a 54-year-old man was crossing Fifth Avenue at Kirk Road in Brentwood when he was struck by a northbound 1998 Nissan Pathfinder. The pedestrian, whose name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was taken to South Shore University Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was pronounced dead, Suffolk police said.

The driver of the Nissan, a 28-year-old Bay Shore man, was not injured.

The Nissan was impounded for a safety check.

Earlier Wednesday, an 18-year-old was driving a 2009 Honda Civic south on Ninth Avenue in Huntington Station at 3:34 p.m. when his car struck a tow-truck driver who was hooking up a disabled vehicle parked on the shoulder.

The tow truck driver, identified as a 29-year-old Huntington Station man, was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of serious injuries, police said. The driver of the Honda, also of Huntington Station, was not injured.

No further information was available on either incident.
