Riverhead police are investigating a fiery car crash in Riverhead that left one man dead Saturday afternoon.

The Riverhead Police Department said a 2006 Buick, driven by Derek J. Cruz, 27, of Riverhead, veered off the roadway and collided with trees on Osborn Avenue near Honey Lane around 2 p.m. The four-door sedan caught fire and was extinguished by firefighters before officers arrived, a news release from the department said.

After Cruz was removed from the Buick, he was taken to the Peconic Bay Medical Center where he died of his injuries. Cruz was alone in the sedan and no other injuries occurred in the crash, police said.

Police ask anyone with information about the crash to call (631) 727-4500.
