A Bellport man was killed when the car he was driving veered into oncoming traffic on Montauk Highway in Shirley and hit another car, injuring the two occupants, Suffolk police said.

Montauk Highway was shut down in both directions at Smith Road for three hours after the 1992 Mazda driven by Angel Espiet, 26, left the westbound lanes and hit an eastbound 2017 Subaru about 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

Espiet was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the Subaru, Dylan O’Brien, 24, and his passenger, Marissa Joynt, 23, of Shirley, had injuries that were not life-threatening, and they were taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue, authorities said.

A photo from the scene showed the front of one car crumpled against the side of the other car.

The vehicles were impounded for safety checks. Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call Seventh Squad detectives at 631-852-8752.
