The MTA and Suffolk County police are investigating a fatal train accident Monday in St. James as a possible suicide, after a 62-year-old man was struck and killed near the grade-level crossing at Mills Pond Road, a Long Island Rail Road spokeswoman said.

Spokeswoman Marjorie Anders said only the man's age is being released, pending notification of next of kin.

The incident was reported in a 911 call at 11:02 a.m., Suffolk police said. Service on the Port Jefferson branch was suspended between Smithtown and Port Jefferson until 12:25 p.m., the railroad said.

The MTA said the pedestrian was struck near the third crossing east of the St. James station, by an eastbound diesel-dual mode train.

The train involved was the 10:05 a.m. train from Hicksville, due to arrive in Port Jefferson at 11:10 a.m. The train was held at the scene until 12:25 p.m.

The area is single track, leading to the service suspension.
