The tenant of an Eastport home was shot and killed in a burglary attempt early Sunday morning, Suffolk County police officials said.

Investigators said two burglars who were wearing masks broke into the house located near Montauk Highway and Union Avenue and demanded money. One tenant was shot and killed and the other was shot in the hand. Police were called to the scene at 3:25 a.m., and the person shot in the hand was later treated at a hospital and released.

A police spokeswoman said no arrests have been made in the case. Citing the ongoing investigation, she said the department was not yet identifying the shooting victims. Police said six other tenants were believed to live at the house.

Police officials said it's not clear if the home was targeted or if the burglary attempt was random.
