Fire at Medford recycling plant

A fire started late Wednesday night at the Gershow Recycling facility in Medford, according to Suffolk County fire officials.
Four fire departments responded to put out flames from burning piles of debris and rubbish, fire authorities said.
Suffolk police said the fire was reported at 10:40 p.m.
By 11:30 p.m., the firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading, Suffolk fire officials said. Volunteers at the scene were from Medford, Holtsville, Brookhaven and Coram fire departments, along with Medford ambulance, fire officials said.
The recycling business, at 71 Peconic Ave., has been operating for 47 years, buying, selling and hauling scrap metal, plastic and other recyclables from individuals and business. According to its website, it employs 750 people at seven locations on Long Island and one in Brooklyn.
No other details were available.
