Fire at Olympic Motor Lodge in Hauppauge

Seven fire departments battled a fire at the Olympic Motor Lodge, 650 Motor Parkway, in Hauppauge on Friday night, Suffolk fire and police officials said.

An official with Suffolk Fire and Rescue said the fire, which was reported at 8:21 p.m., was declared under control about 9:30 p.m. Neither police nor fire officials had any reports of injuries. Officials said they had no information about the cause of the blaze or the extent of damage.

Ten people were displaced from the motel and the Red Cross had been notified, a fire official said.

Cierra Wynn, of Riverdale, Georgia, had been at the hotel for two weeks. She is a dispatching secretary for A-Awesome Towing and Trucking, which is transporting Sandy-damaged cars for an insurance company.

Wynn said she had been sitting in the bar when she noticed people running outside. "I step out here and see the hotel is up in flames," she said.

"I'm cold and I have to stand outside," Wynn, 25, said. She has to work Saturday, she said, and hadn't been told where she'd be staying Friday night.

Jorge Rivera, 37, of Blue Point, and Gabrielle Sloat, 27, of Brentwood, were in their room at the back of the motel when someone banged on the door and told them to get out.

Sloat "smelled smoke and then we opened the door and we saw the smoke," Rivera said.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., Red Cross officials arrived.

Red Cross spokesman Craig Cooper said eight people were going to be relocated from the motel. All would most likely stay in nearby motels for several days until the Olympic could reopen.
