Fire causes evacuation of Stony Brook dorm, officials say
A Stony Brook University dorm was evacuated because of a fire Saturday night, university police said.
The fire was reported at 8:35 p.m. in the dorm at O'Neill College, which is one of 28 resident halls at the university, Stony Brook officials said. University police and fire marshals responded to the dorm hall and quickly extinguished the fire, a university spokeswoman said.
Students were not in the dorm room when the fire started and no one was hurt. The dorm room remained evacuated late Saturday night, university officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Mendelsohn Quad includes O'Neill College and three other buildings. Each building houses about 36 students in corridor living, according to the university's website.
CORRECTION: Mendelsohn Quad is the correct spelling of the housing units. Earlier versions of this story used another spelling.
