A late-night trash can fire caused "significant" exterior damage to a boatyard building Tuesday in Islip, police said.

Suffolk County police said the fire at Arnott's Boat Yard, also known as the Winter Brothers Shipyard, on Athasca Road does not appear to have been suspicious. The fire was reported at 10:26 p.m.

Police said volunteers from the Islip and East Islip fire departments extinguished the blaze, which apparently started in a garbage container outside a building at the boatyard.

There were no reported injuries and no boats were reported damaged in the fire.
