The clock tower of a junior high school in Setauket caught fire Wednesday night, delaying the opening of school by three hours Thursday, Suffolk County police and Three Village Central School District officials said.
School is delayed to finish cleaning up after the fire, the district said on its website.
The fire at Paul J. Gelinas Junior High School was reported at 11:50 p.m., officials said. Police were sent to the scene and reported smoke and flames coming from the bell tower, fire officials said.
Volunteer firefighters from Setauket, Port Jefferson, Stony Brook and Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance were dispatched. Fire officials said no one was injured in the fire.
Police said the cause was not immediately known Thursday, but said arson squad detectives were not investigating.
A message on the Three Village school district website said the opening of school would be delayed three hours Thursday.
The message said, "Students should be at their bus stop three hours later than normal. Staff should report to the school at 8:30 a.m. A modified 9-period bell schedule will be followed."
