A late-morning fire gutted an unoccupied apartment Wednesday in North Babylon, Suffolk County police said.

The fire at the Somerset Village garden apartments on August Road appeared accidental, Suffolk fire officials said.

The Suffolk fire marshal was still investigating.

The fire was reported at 11:34 a.m., police and fire officials said. Firefighters from North Babylon, Babylon and Wyandanch responded, officials said. The scene was clear at 1:15 p.m.

Police said the fire was in an unoccupied apartment. They said the apartment directly above the fire scene also was unoccupied - and that no one was injured in the blaze.
