A man jumped and died Friday from an observation platform at the Fire Island Lighthouse in an apparent suicide, police said.

Suffolk County homicide detectives were investigating the death at the lighthouse, which took place at 1:45 p.m.

The man was seen on video walking up to the top of the lighthouse by himself, Suffolk County Homicide Lt. Kevin Beyrer told reporters. He was seen on top of the tower by himself and jumped over a four foot fence on the observation deck, Beyrer said.

Alexcy Romero, superintendent of the Fire Island National Seashore, said: "A gentleman bought a ticket to access the lighthouse tower and he jumped."
