Volunteers from the Setauket Fire Department extinguished a construction-related fire under the bleachers at the indoor sports complex at Stony Brook University Wednesday morning, school and Suffolk County fire officials said.

A university official said in an email that the fire broke out at about 11:18 a.m. in a part of the sports complex "that was largely unoccupied due to construction,"

There were no injuries and the building was evacuated, the official said.

Stony Brook University Police, Stony Brook fire marshals and the Stony Brook Volunteer Ambulance Corps responded to the scene along with the Setauket, Stony Brook, Centereach, Terryville and St. James Fire Departments, the email said.

Damage to the building is being assessed, the official said.

Lawrence Zacarese, assistant chief of police and director of the Office of Emergency Management at the university, alerted students and faculty of the fire in an email and asked that they stay clear of the area.
