Two men were injured in Islandia at a softball game for local firefighters on Sunday, police said.

Shortly before 8 p.m., police said, John Mendoza, 35, of Islip Terrace, was struck in the head by a softball and knocked unconscious.

Robert Powers, Jr., 32, of Ronkonkoma, went to get a medical bag from his vehicle to treat Mendoza and was struck by a 2007 Toyota sedan driven by Margherita Martinez, 37, of Islandia.

Police said the accidents happened near the intersection of Old Nichols Road and Express Drive South.

Powers, who police identified as a firefighter, suffered a broken ankle. He and Mendoza, whose profession police did not know, were treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

No charges have been filed, police said, and the incident is being investigated.
