Firefighter, worker hurt in recycling facility fire

A firefighter and a town worker were hurt battling a stubborn fire at a Brentwood recycling facility Tuesday, police and fire officials said.
Both were taken to hospitals. The injuries were not considered serious, authorities said.
Firefighters responded to the fire at 2:18 a.m. and found smoldering debris in a 300-by 300-foot building at Emjay Boulevard. Volunteers from at least nine fire departments -- Brentwood, East Brentwood, Bay Shore, Deer Park, West Islip, Islip, East Islip, North Babylon and Commack -- battled the blaze for more than 10 hours.
Heavy machinery was used to pull apart piles of debris as responders searched for pockets of fire, officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Suffolk County Water Authority was at the site to monitor water pressure, and the county also sent personnel from the Department of Public Works.
