Two volunteer firefighters were hospitalized after an early morning blaze Thursday at a two-story home in Islip, fire officials said.

The fire started in a second-floor bedroom of the home on Princeton Street near Freeman Avenue, Islip fire Chief Richard Patch said. It was reported at about 5:10 a.m.

Firefighters from Islip, Islip Terrace, Brentwood and Bay Shore arrived to find the home burning, and took about one hour to bring it under control, Patch said.

Both firefighters - one from Islip, one from Islip Terrace - were taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where they were treated and released later Thursday.

The owner of the home escaped by climbing out of a second-floor window and onto the roof, and then climbing down a ladder, Patch said. No one else was inside at the time of the fire.
