Firefighters suffer from heat at fire
Several firefighters were treated for heat-related symptoms Monday after responding to a West Sayville fire, officials said.
Most of the firefighters were treated at the scene, officials said, but one was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he was treated and released.
West Sayville Fire Department Chief Joe Schroeder said an accidental fire at a two-story home on Tyler Avenue, reported about 10:30 a.m., took more than an hour to bring under control.
"The interior of the front portion of the house is pretty much gone," Schroeder said, "But the structure is pretty much intact."
Part of the more than 100-year-old building was being renovated, and a contractor accidentally cut through an electrical component in a wall, starting the blaze, fire department officials said.
About 45 firefighters from the West Sayville, Bohemia, East Islip, Holbrook, Bayport and Islip Terrace fire departments were at the scene, and Lakeland firefighters were on standby.
Officials with Community Ambulance of Sayville said they treated a total of four firefighters for heat-related symptoms at the scene that was caused primarily by the outside temperatures in the mid-80s with humidity at nearly 90 percent.
