A Coast Guard cutter was towing a stranded Long Island fishing vessel to shore Tuesday morning, after a shaft on the commercial boat broke in ocean waters southwest of Montauk, a spokesman for the agency said.

The Viking Pride, a 60-foot stern trawler, sent a radio message that it was stranded at about 5:30 a.m., Petty Officer Seth Johnson said. The Coast Guard cutter Juniper from Newport, R.I., responded and was towing in the vessel, Johnson said.

"The Viking Pride is in tow, about 35 miles southwest of Montauk, in rough seas," he said shortly before noon.

The commercial boat did not take any water, and the three fishermen aboard reported no injuries, Johnson said.

Johnson said he was not sure where the ship would be towed.
