A Florida man was killed Thursday when his car veered off Sunrise Highway in Patchogue, struck a guardrail on the right shoulder, crossed three lanes of traffic, then hit the median guardrail, Suffolk County police said.

Rick Poulos, 54, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., was driving a 2010 Volkswagen when the accident occurred at 8:36 a.m., about half a mile east of Waverly Avenue, in the westbound lanes, police said.

He was pronounced dead at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center, East Patchogue, where he was taken by North Patchogue Fire Department ambulance. Police said no other vehicles were involved.

Fifth Squad detectives are investigating and ask anyone who may have seen the accident to call them at 631-854-8552.
