A 50-year-old bicyclist was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle Friday night in Southampton Town, police said.

Robert L. Nelson of Flanders was struck when his bicycle apparently crossed into a traffic lane at Flanders Road near Cypress Avenue about 7:45 p.m., Southampton Town police said.

A Northampton Volunteer Ambulance took Nelson to Peconic Bay Medical Center, in Riverhead, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Nelson was hit by a northbound 1998 Grand Cherokee that remained at the scene, police said. There were no charges brought Friday night by the Southampton Town Police, which are conducting the investigation.
