For officials, a 6-hour day (technically)

A six-hour work day for Suffolk's elected officials?

That's what may be found in a resolution facing a legislative vote tomorrow. But George Nolan, legislative counsel, said the measure has nothing to do with hours they put in. It is to meet new state regulations calling for elected officials, who don't file time cards, to report hours to meet pension requirements.

"I don't think anyone is working just six hours a day," Nolan said. "Everyone is way above that."

Nolan said county elected officials carried around diaries last summer to detail their work activities. Then the resolution was put off, after county lawyers got word the state comptroller might alter the rules.

But last month, legislative clerk Tim Laube learned at a statewide clerks' meeting that many other counties had already acted. "To be safe, we decided we should pass something," Nolan said.
