Free child car seat inspections in Central Islip
The inspections will be given by certified technicians, who have taken about 28 hours of classes that cover makes of cars, types of restraints, types of seats and other issues.
"Three out of four car seats are installed incorrectly," said EAC regional director Rachel Lugo. "We don't just correct the seat, but we do educate the parents at the fitting."
EAC, headquartered in Hempstead, has been offering inspections for years through a state grant, but this week, Suffolk officers for the first time are being trained to do such inspections, Lugo said.
Inspections will be available from noon to 3 p.m. at EAC's Central Islip office, 80 Wheeler Rd. Appointments are required by calling EAC at 631-648-7100 ext. 210. For more information, call the Suffolk County Police Community Response Bureau at 631-852-6109.
Spanish speakers are available and other translators may be requested when making appointments.
