Funerals for 2 slain cops set for Friday

There will be two funerals on Long Island Friday for police officers killed in the line of duty.

At 9:30 a.m., a service for NYPD Officer Alain Schaberger is to be held at the Fredrick J. Chapey & Sons Funeral Home, 200 E. Main St., East Islip. Burial will follow at Long Island National Cemetery, Pinelawn.

At 12:30 p.m., a service for Nassau County Police Officer Geoffrey J. Breitkopf is scheduled at St. Margaret of Scotland Roman Catholic Church, 81 College Rd., Selden. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram.

As a result, there will be street closings and traffic disruptions in Selden and East Islip.

In East Islip, Montauk Highway will be closed between Carleton Avenue and Heckscher Parkway from 7:30 to 11 a.m., police said, for Schaberger's funeral. He was killed early Sunday during a domestic violence call in Brooklyn.

After the funeral home service, a procession will travel east on South Country Road to the Southern State Parkway, exit onto Wellwood Avenue and north several blocks to Long Island National Cemetery.

In Selden, for the Breitkopf funeral, College Road will be closed between Mooney Pond Road and Middle Country Road from 10 a.m. to about 3 p.m., police said. Breitkopf was accidentally shot by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority police officer while responding to a crime scene Saturday night in Massapequa Park.

After that service, the procession will travel east on Mooney Pond Road to Port Jefferson and Patchogue Road, and then south to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Police said the times for the closings were approximate and that traffic could be affected on other roads in the area of the funerals and the processions.
