Man, 87, charged with lewd acts in Lloyd Harbor

An 87-year-old Lloyd Harbor man was arrested Monday and charged with public lewdness after twice attempting to lure children to his car with candy this month, Suffolk County police said.
Galip Gulmez, of 6 Horseshoe Path, was arrested at his home about 1 p.m., police said. He is charged with public lewdness and endangering the welfare of a child.
He was being held overnight at the Second Precinct in Huntington and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Tuesday.
"We're happy we're able to bring this one to a close," Det. Sgt. James Scimone of the Second Precinct said. "We're just concerned that there might be other victims, so if anybody has encountered this gentleman, contact the Second Squad, 854-8252."
According to Scimone, on Aug. 10 Gulmez was sitting in his gray 2011 Subaru when he offered candy to children nearby at West Neck Beach in Lloyd Harbor about 2 p.m. A female baby-sitter who was with the children approached the Subaru and noticed Gulmez was not wearing pants and was performing a lewd act, police said.
She did not immediately report the incident to authorities, but later the children's parents notified Lloyd Harbor police.
Scimone said on Aug. 22 Gulmez was seen at Fiddler's Green Drive attempting to lure children to his car with candy. Gulmez was clothed and was not performing lewd acts, but Lloyd Harbor police were called and were able to speak to Gulmez, and get a plate number and photos of the car, Scimone said.
"At this point, they didn't know what they had initially," Scimone said.
On Aug. 25, Lloyd Harbor police sent their records over to the Second Precinct, which initiated an investigation.
"Today we were able to get the first complaining witness in, the baby-sitter, to successfully wrap up the investigation," Scimone said.
Scimone praised the Lloyd Harbor Police Department.
"It's important to note they did a good job finding this guy the second time and that's what really brought this arrest about," he said.
