Garbage truck crash jams traffic on LIE in Medford
A garbage truck traveling eastbound on the Long Island Expressway struck a guardrail and overturned Thursday afternoon, closing all lanes and backing up traffic at Exit 64 in Medford, the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office said.
The truck swerved, avoiding a car, and bounced off the guardrail, overturning at about 1:46 p.m., Michael Sharkey, chief of staff said. Traffic was backed up at least for two exits as all lanes of the expressway were closed, he said.
Cameras at the New York State Department of Transportation's website showed traffic backed up to Exit 62 in Holbrook as late as 3:30 p.m.
Rescue crews did respond, but the only injury was a cut to the head of the truck's driver. He was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center.
