A suspected natural gas leak closed Lakeland Avenue and caused the evacuation of a home in Bohemia Monday, Suffolk County police and a National Grid official said.

National Grid spokeswoman Elizabeth Margulies said a contractor struck a line to a private residence with a piece of construction equipment at 11:22 a.m. - and said six people were evacuated from the home. No one was injured.

Service to the house was turned off, Margulies said.

Emergency crews were on the scene to repair the line.

Police said Lakeland was closed between Sunrise Highway and Church Street as a precaution. The road was reopened at 11:56 a.m.
