An 8-year-old girl is in serious condition after she was struck by a van while walking across New York Avenue in Huntington just after noon on Saturday, Suffolk police said.
The child, who lives in Lloyd Harbor, was first taken to Huntington Hospital and then hospitalized at Cohen Children's Medical Center in Queens, according to police.
Her condition initially was described as critical after the 1997 Ford van, driven by Pedro Guerrero of West Babylon, struck her in front of 586 New York Ave., police said.
Guerrero, who was headed south on New York Avenue, was not hurt and remained at the scene, police said.
Police said they temporarily closed New York Avenue in both directions between Woodland and Grandview streets.
Safety checks will be performed on the van, which was impounded, police said.
Anyone with information should call 631-854-8252.
