Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Friday endorsed Republican Angie Carpenter for Suffolk County executive, saying she can put the county "back on track."

Giuliani, a Republican, said Carpenter "has the business skills, the government skills and most importantly, the leadership skills that Suffolk County needs in these uncertain times . . . Angie Carpenter is a tough businesswoman who has the skills needed to put Suffolk County back on track."

Giuliani's statement, issued in a news release, came in a week of big-name endorsements and appearances in the county executive campaign. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo on Wednesday appeared at a get-out-the vote rally for Carpenter's Democratic opponent, Babylon Town Supervisor Steve Bellone. Cuomo endorsed Bellone last month. Also Wednesday, former GOP Gov. George Pataki endorsed Carpenter, the Suffolk County treasurer.

Suffolk Democratic chairman Richard Schaffer downplayed the Giuliani endorsement. "We are looking forward to the most important endorsement: from the voters on Election Day."
