A vehicle found in the Great South Bay early Sunday morning near the Bayport shore was unoccupied, Suffolk County police said in an email.

Police and the Bayport Fire department responded to a 911 call about a car in the water about 50 feet off shore from South Gillette Avenue around 1:35 a.m.

Responders searched the water but found no one in the car  or in the water. A News 12 Long Island broadcast showed a helicopter and police boats searching the area in the predawn hours. Suffolk County police said Sunday night the vehicle had been removed from the water and the investigation was continuing.
