Greenlawn firefighter rescues woman from burning car

An off-duty Greenlawn firefighter pulled a woman out of a burning car on Wednesday afternoon, officials said.

The firefighter, David Mordarski, was driving east on Pulaski Road when he saw a blue Ford Taurus in the middle of the road, First Assistant Chief Kurt Allen said.

Allen said the car apparently struck a utility pole about 4:30 p.m. and the male driver was outside of the vehicle when Mordarski, a seven-year firefighter, arrived.

Allen said Mordarski was talking to the woman, who was stuck in the passenger seat, when he noticed smoke coming out of the dashboard, which quickly turned into flames.

Mordarski "instantly reacted" and pulled the woman out of the driver's side of the car.

Both the man and woman were consciousness and alert after the accident and were taken to Huntington Hospital, Allen said. Greenlawn Fire Department and Suffolk County police responded.
