Greenport man killed in car crash
A Greenport man died on Saturday after the car he was riding in swerved to avoid a deer in the road, then crashed into a utility pole, police said today.
Corey Freeman, 23, was riding in a 1999 Infiniti QX4 driven by 29-year-old Terrence Lawrence of Greenport at about 4 a.m. on Saturday on County Road 48 when Lawrence suddenly swerved to avoid a deer, Southold Town police said.
The vehicle left the road and crashed into a pole. Freeman was taken to Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. Lawrence, who received minor injuries, was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. Police said there are no criminal charges at this time.
