Greenport mom charged in drug raid
The Greenport mother of a 7-year-old boy faces charges of drug possession and unlawfully dealing with a child after agents of the East End Drug Task Force raided her home Wednesday, Southold Town police said.
Police said crack cocaine, marijuana, drug scales and an unspecified amount of cash were recovered in the morning raid at 420 Carpenter St.
The home's occupant, Charmaine N. Freeman, 26, was arrested on the charges and her son was removed from the home and placed with family members elsewhere in Greenport, said Det. Sgt. John Sinning of the Southold Town Police Department.
In addition to Southold police, the task force includes law enforcement personnel from the Suffolk County district attorney's office, Suffolk County police, its emergency service unit and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Canine Unit. Each agency was involved in the raid, Southold police said.
Freeman is charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, using drug paraphernalia and unlawfully dealing with a child. The latter charge, a misdemeanor, is because her son was in an environment where narcotics were being sold, Sinning said.
Freeman is scheduled to be arraigned at Southold Town Justice Court.
