Group builds discount veteran home
Long Island Home Builders Care will break ground Monday on a Sound Beach house, the first of many homes the organization hopes to build to sell at reduced rates to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.
Long Island Home Builders Care, the charitable arm of Long Island Builders Institute, will build the Medford Road home with volunteer labor on land donated by Rocky Point builder Mark Baisch, owner of Landmark Properties of Suffolk, said Lois Fricke, a spokeswoman for the organization.
The home will be sold to Army Staff Sgt. Omar Domenech of Brooklyn, who served three tours of duty in Iraq and Kuwait, for $100,000, Fricke said.
The home, a three-bedroom high ranch, is expected to be finished in November, Fricke said. Domenech, who is pursuing a master's degree in social work, will live in the home with his wife, Angela, and children Ashley and Omar Jr., Fricke said.
Long Island Home Builders Care, a building industry trade association based in Islandia, plans to build two more homes for veterans in Patchogue later this year, she said.
Monday's groundbreaking will begin at 11 a.m. at 9 Medford Rd. in Sound Beach.
