Gunman sought after argument in Amityville
An argument over a parking space led to gunfire Saturday morning in Amityville, Suffolk police said.
The incident started about 9:20 a.m. when a 30-year-old Massapequa contractor on his way to work left the Dunkin' Donuts at 355 Broadway in Amityville and walked through the parking lot to his van, said Det. Sgt. Marco Giudice of the Suffolk County Police Department. The Massapequa man inadvertently walked in front of a parking space the driver of a newer model, light brown Chevrolet Tahoe was trying to back in to. The Tahoe driver, apparently angered by the maneuver, started an argument, Giudice said.
After the argument, the Massapequa man left in his 2007 Chevrolet Express van, driving north on Broadway. The Tahoe followed and just as they were crossing the Sunrise Highway overpass, the Tahoe driver fired one shot with a handgun.
The bullet struck the van's front wheel well. Neither the Massapequa man nor his 21-year-old passenger was injured.
Police seek help to find the suspected shooter, a dark-skinned, balding, black man with a full black beard, 30 to 40 years old, according to police. He is about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds with a muscular build. He was wearing a green and black hat, white T-shirt and brown shorts.
Detectives are asking anyone with information to call the First Squad at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477.
