Hampton Bays man arrested in jewelry theft
A 24-year-old Hampton Bays man was in jail Tuesday, arraigned on charges he stole $100,000 worth of jewels from a home on Westerly Road in Hampton Bays, prosecutors said.
Southampton Town police arrested Nicholas Spiegel at 11:42 p.m. Sunday, about 5 1/2 hours after a resident of the home reported the jewels missing from a safe, according to a news release.
It was not immediately clear what led police to Spiegel, and police investigators Tuesday did not return calls seeking comment on the case.
Spiegel was arraigned Monday at Southampton Town Court and ordered held on $10,000 bail by Judge Barbara Wilson. He is due back in court Thursday.
