A man trying to guide a forklift operator in Montauk on Thursday was struck and killed by the machine, East Hampton Town police said.

Hector O. Duarte-Roque, 44, of Hampton Bays, was guiding the operator in moving the forklift’s load of dock construction material when the accident occurred just before 11 a.m. on northbound East Lake Drive, police said.

The victim was airlifted to Southampton Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The forklift was impounded for a safety check, police said, and investigators are looking into the cause of the fatal accident.
