Two drivers were hospitalized Tuesday with non-life-threatening injuries after an early morning head-on collision in St. James, police said.

The crash occurred about 5:30 a.m. on North Country Road near the intersection with Woodlawn Avenue, Suffolk County police said.

Neither driver was identified by police. Police said both were taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.

No one was charged in the accident.

Police said one driver told them he had was reaching for an item -- believed to be a lunch box or a thermos -- that had fallen on the floor and took his eyes off the road, crossing into the oncoming lane.
