A 67-year-old bather pulled from the waters off Fire Island National Seashore on Saturday afternoon died of a heart attack, officials said Tuesday.

The chief ranger for the national park, Lena Koschmann, said the Suffolk County medical examiner had determined Ovidio Villavicenio of Elmhurst, Queens, died of cardiac arrest. She told Newsday that sunbathers near the lighthouse had seen the man, facedown in the water about 100 feet from shore, at about 1:15 p.m.

"A couple of swimmers pulled him in," Koschmann said, adding: "Lifeguards from Robert Moses State Park responded almost immediately and tried to revive him."

Officials said Villavicenio was later declared dead at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.
