As Long Island wilted in 90-degree heat Tuesday, the Long Island Expressway buckled, forcing authorities to close the left and center westbound lanes to make repairs near Exit 68 in Manorville.

"It appears the road buckled due to the heat," a Suffolk police spokeswoman said. With traffic backing up, she said the lanes were expected to reopen.

On July 9, high temperatures caused similar problems. State Department of Transportation crews spent several hours repairing a stretch of buckled roadway on busy Route 25 at the intersection with Route 347 in Lake Grove.
