A Brooklyn man driving early Monday morning on the Heckscher State Parkway in East Islip died in a single-vehicle crash, the New York State Police said.
The driver was identified as Muhammad Qamar, 22, said state police spokesperson Trooper Brittany Burton. Troopers responded about 5:43 a.m. to the crash, which occurred in the eastbound lanes near the roadway’s name change to Southern State Parkway, Burton said.
Qamar's vehicle struck several trees along the parkway before overturning. Qamar was pronounced dead at the scene, Burton said.
A woman who identified herself over the phone as a relative of Qamar's said the family did not want to comment on his death when reached by Newsday late Monday.
While the incident remains under investigation, Burton said in a text message to Newsday, "Speed appears to be the primary factor."
Additional information about the crash was not immediately available Monday afternoon.
