A driver headed the wrong way on the Southern/Heckscher State Parkway in East Islip died after a head-on collision late Monday night, State Police said.

Police said Roy Nelson, 73, of Holbrook, was driving a 2010 Hyundai Sonata northbound in the southbound lanes of the parkway between exits 44 and 45 when he struck a 2020 Tesla around 10:30 p.m.

Nelson, who police believe may have had a medical emergency, was taken to South Shore University Hospital but later died of his injuries, police said.

The Tesla driver was also taken to South Shore University Hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and the State Police ask any witnesses or anyone with information to call 631-756-3300.
