West Meadow Beach in Stony Brook has been closed to bathing because it has high levels of bacteria, Suffolk County health officials said Friday.

A water quality test showed storm runoff bacteria was high after Tuesday's storm and a second test on Thursday again showed high counts of the bacteria, according to the health department's website.

It's the first time this year that West Meadow Beach has been closed to bathers.

Beaches across Long Island have been closed and reopened all summer as storm runoff set the stage for bacterial growth.

About two weeks ago, the Suffolk health department issued an advisory against swimming in 66 beaches after heavy rain sent bacteria-laden runoff pouring into harbors, rivers and bays.

Information on beach advisories and closures is available at the Bathing Beach hotline at 631-852-5822; the health department's ecology office at 631-852-5760; and suffolkcountyny.gov/health, under "Our Environment," then "Beaches."
