High temperatures lead to Brentwood brush fire

The extreme heat is the likely cause of Tuesday afternoon's Brentwood brush fire, which firefighters expect will take until Wednesday morning to fully extinguish, officials said.

The brush and timber fire, which burned nearly 30 acres at the state Department of Environmental Conservation's Edgewood Preserve, started in the preserve's northeast section and spread west and southwest.

No one was hurt in the fire.

The first call about the fire came in at about 2:20 p.m., and 20 fire departments and 150 personnel responded.

Tom Waldron, the first assistant chief of the Brentwood Fire Department, blamed the fire on the heat.

"The problem with this high heat, everything's dry," he said. "All it needs is a little ignition," he said.

Firefighters will work through the night to put out the few patches that are still burning, officials said.
