Historic Centerport house is landmark
The Huntington Town Board has voted to give town historic landmark status to the Velsor-Van Alst House on Fort Salonga Road in Centerport.
The town board voted 5-0 to approve the measure at its Tuesday meeting, following a recommendation by the town’s Historic Preservation Commission. The house was built in the mid-1800s in the Greek Revival style and the limited changes made since then match the original architecture, town officials said.
Town Historian Robert Hughes said the most important reason to give the house historic designation is to save it from being demolished.
"The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so its historical merit has been established,” Hughes said in a March email.
He added that it’s the town’s policy to give local designation to all properties on the National Register. He said he also received numerous calls about the house over the past few months from potential buyers and others interested in seeing it preserved.
