Historic Eastville photographs, showing East End diversity, go on display in Sag Harbor Saturday
Historians plan to unveil salvaged 19th-century and early 20th-century photographs from Sag Harbor's Eastville neighborhood at a Saturday exhibit opening.
The 54 photographs -- a mix of tintypes and paper images -- were found in two historic homes in Eastville and rephotographed, restored and reprinted this year by the Eastville Community Historical Society.
Historical society members said the photos show the striking diversity of Eastville, a working-class neighborhood settled in the 19th century by African-Americans, American Indians and European immigrants with ties to the whaling and domestic trades in Sag Harbor.
Many of the photos depict residents of different ethnicities dressed in formal attire, posed in the studio of William G. Howard, a photographer who lived and worked in the area from 1882 to 1915.
The exhibit opening is scheduled to take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Heritage House on Hampton Street in Sag Harbor. The photos will remain on display until Oct. 10
