A Deer Park man crossing a street in his hometown Monday was struck and killed by pickup truck that left the scene, Suffolk police said.

Robert Donohue, 51, was crossing Deer Park Avenue eastbound at Grand Boulevard at 2:53 p.m. when the southbound pickup truck hit him, said Major Case Unit detectives, in a news release.

The vehicle then fled the scene, police said. Donohue was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The pickup truck was described as a dark colored four-door with possible front end and passenger-side damage

Few other details were available Monday night, but police said they shut down traffic in both directions on both streets for at least seven hours after the crash for an investigation.

Detectives ask anyone with information to call the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
