Eighteen-year-old Devesh Samtani was in a crowd of Hamptons partygoers Tuesday night spilling out of a large gathering in Amagansett the police had just broken up.

Nineteen-year-old Daniel Campbell was driving an SUV to the party, about to drop people off at the house.

That's according to the East Hampton police, who said Campbell struck Samtani with his vehicle, then fled, leaving Samtani seriously injured with head trauma. About two hours later, the police tracked down and arrested Campbell, based on a description of the vehicle and license plate remembered by partygoers who were dispersing, Det. Sgt. Daniel Tioa told Newsday.

Campbell, of Montauk, had been driving a 2012 Honda Pilot northbound on Old Stone Highway near Eastwood Court when he struck Samtani, of Hong Kong, at about 11:35 p.m., according to a police news release. Samtani was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital and was in serious condition, Toia said just after 4 p.m.

Police said Campbell was arrested at 2:43 a.m., Wednesday.

Campbell couldn't be immediately reached for comment. Toia said Campbell was freed and ordered to appear at court at a later date for arraignment on a charge of leaving the scene of the crash.
