Holbrook man pleads not guilty to DWI in crash that killed pedestrian

A Holbrook man was arraigned Monday on a charge of driving drunk when police said he struck and killed a pedestrian on the north service road of Sunrise Highway in Holbrook Sunday evening.

Darrin Villa, 40, of Edwil Court, pleaded not guilty to one count of operating a motor vehicle while in an intoxicated condition when authorities said he struck and killed John Cain, 56, of Bohemia.

Suffolk police said Cain was walking westbound in the road when Villa crashed his sport utility vehicle, a 2003 Nissan Xterra, into Cain. The collision occurred near Nicolls Road at about 7:50 p.m.

Bail was set $5,000 and Villa remained in custody as of Monday afternoon, authorities said. He is scheduled to return to First District Court in Central Islip on Oct. 25.
